5 Ways to Boost Your Creativity (Without Forcing It)

Creativity isn’t just for artists. It’s the magic behind clever solutions, bold ideas and the kind of thinking that makes brands stick in your mind long after you’ve scrolled past. And good news: creativity isn’t some mystical talent. It’s a mindset that you can train, stretch and grow a little every day.

If you’re feeling a little bit stuck or your ideas are hiding from you, here are five simple strategies that will help you spark something new in both work and in life.

Learn From The Greats

Creativity doesn’t always begin with a blank page. Sometimes, it starts by learning how others think.

Take Steve Jobs, for example; his fascination with calligraphy later shaped Apple’s iconic typography. Or even Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, who is intensely disciplined about his workouts and healthy lifestyle. Something that he famously credits for his successes.

This is all to say that inspiration can come from anywhere. No matter the design, tech, street art, or even your morning kopi run, creativity can be sparked by the most unlikely of things.

Do Something Unfamiliar

New experiences flex your imagination and give your creative muscles the kind of workout they secretly love. When you let yourself be a beginner again, you shake up old thought patterns and make space for fresh ideas to slip in. And just like that, every new moment becomes a little seed of inspiration your brain can’t resist.

Go off your usual routine. Try an art jamming session, a pottery class, or even spend an afternoon exploring Singapore’s less-visited corners. Whether it’s the intricate details of a centuries-old shophouse facade, the vibrant backstreets of Little India, or the green trails along the Rail Corridor, experiencing the world differently helps you think differently, too.

Worry less about being “good” at what you do. That isn’t the point of this exercise. The goal here is to remind yourself what it feels like to imagine and experiment without the shackles of expectations.

Break Your Brainstorm Routine

If your brainstorming sessions always feel like a chore, you’re doing it wrong.

The trick to creative thinking is to remove the pressure and have a little fun with it. Start with the bad ideas. Yes, don’t hesitate to list out the ‘durian-scented candles’, ‘10-inch running shoes’, or ‘silent karaoke’. The most absurd ideas have the best insights hiding underneath.

You can also try the Six Thinking Hats method. This is a creative framework that gets you to view any problem from the six different perspectives of logic, emotion, optimism, risk, creativity, and control. Structured in a way to let your brain run wild without losing focus, this method is aimed at sparking ideas you’d otherwise miss.

Step Outside (Literally)

When did you last go out for air that wasn’t from your office AC? As with most cases, life’s great ideas rarely come from staring at a screen. Fresh air, sunlight, and movement are often what you need to break mental loops.

Take a walk along Marina Bay’s promenade at sunset. Grab a cup of coffee and people-watch at a cafe. Take in how the city comes alive around you and sit with how your mind takes in the colours, the conversation, and the life that is happening around you. Once your mind relaxes, new connections form, and creativity flows naturally.

Start a Passion Project

Not everything needs KPIs. Sometimes, creating for yourself is the one move you need for that next groundbreaking idea.

Starting something because you want to bring joy into the creation process. It doesn't even have to be a big, multi-month behemoth; it could be just a weekly doodle challenge, a craft project, or even taking videos just to document a moment in time. These projects remind you of what creativity feels like when there’s no client brief, no feedback loop, and only pure creation.

The key here is consistency, not perfection. One project a week, one project a month, or one photo a day – passion projects keep your creativity flowing.
